Eery Autumn

Description

So it's autumn again, that always evokes mixed feelings in me. On the one hand it's the richness of harvest, colours, hearty meals and the cozy warmth of open fire, and I love a good storm! On the other hand it's a feeling of loss, the pleasant outdoor-ness of summer is gone, people lock themselves up in their private cocoons again and the cold, solitude and emptiness of winter are coming.

Vision: outstanding! This is a truly imaginative scene. The street background has a superb sense of autumn colours, with a dark but fiery mood, and a hint of flame in the distance. The swirling leaves also make it clear this is autumn. But what gives the image a superbly eerie look is the figure of the otherworldly girl floating in the air. The dark colours and pensive look seem just right for the season.

Originality: definitely. The scene content is a very fresh take on the theme of autumn, complementing strong traditional themes (the leaves, the fiery colours) with the haunting girl. The ultra-wide aspect ratio is also distinctive.
Technique. The use of colour is superb. Just looking at the colours and ignoring the content for a moment, there is a very pleasing rule-of-thirds gradation running from left to right, structured by the very attractive orange vertical. There are also some very nice little compositional details, like the line of small orange plants along the bottom edge. But I’m not sure about the positioning of the girl. The floating is okay, but I think she is a bit high, and seems to be perched on the top of the streetlamp behind her. Moving her slightly to the left might fix that, or more radically, adding some depth of field bokeh might better bring her out from the foreground and background. But that is just me, and a small criticism to an excellent image.

Impact. Very impactful! The distinctive aspect ratio, the strong colours, and the floating girl work extremely well together. Great image, and I’m looking forward to the artist’s take on winter.
