So nothing happened yet. I was lying fully prepped on the operating table, well 'chair' actually. Iodine on half my face, cloth covering all of it except my right eye, a metal bracket in the socket to keep my eye lid from closing and lashes taped fast, when the ophthalmologist saw something that wasn't there at the last check the week before. She thought it was an infection, so no surgery.
In stead I had to use two kinds of eye drops against a bacterial and an unguent against a viral infection, because she wasn't sure. The checkup a week after showed no difference, conclusion: it wasn't an infection.
And now she thought it was a scar caused by something so rare that there isn't even a Dutch word for it, but of course there is a German one
: 'Kammerwassereinbruch'. Wow, ain't I the lucky one! It means that something of a cavity has developed between the layers of the cornea that subsequently filled with the fluid in the eye ('Kammerwasser'). The cause is unknown. The only cure is a cornea transplant.
So I was referred to a university hospital because there are cornea specialists.
The specialist that saw me there thought it was preferable to operate on my left eye first, to replace the lens and get rid of the cataract there. Then I would at least see properly again with one eye. Later on I can decide whether I want the cornea transplant and replacement lens in my right eye, or am satisfied with normal vision in my left.
I forgot to mention that my right eye has had a high cylindrical distortion for years, so no surgery would mean back to 'normal', where everything is seriously hazy. When this was first ascertained, they told nothing could be done about it. You're not supposed to be able to see depth with only one eye, but somehow my brain learned to compensate and I even have a driving license! To see really normally with both eyes sounds attractive, but a transplant is a scary prospect.
In the mean time I just couldn't completely abandon my art, so eyes glued to the monitor (almost literally) I tried to defy circumstances, even though I could only work little at a time because of too much strain on my eyes, headaches and sore back. But I actually finished something, so please have a look.
